Ask the Experts

How often do I train my employees?

This is a question that many employers ask themselves. The answer depends on the training that you require.

How often do I need WHMIS training?

WHMIS is a set of Federal and Provincial legislations that work together and sometimes overlap one another. While the federal WHMIS regulations state that a company's WHMIS training program must be 'reviewed' on an annual basis - this does not always constitute 're-training'. Provincial WHMIS regulations differ from province to province.

At YOW Canada, we recommend that every company review their WHMIS program at least annually or more frequently if required by a change in work conditions or available hazard information. Reviewing your program ensures that your employees are still adequately trained and knowledgeable.

Generally speaking, WHMIS training should be done annually or every 2 years to ensure compliance with the various regulations and avoid potential penalties and fines.

To determine if your employees are adequately trained, they should be able to properly answer the following four questions:

1. What are the hazards of the controlled product?
2. Where can I get hazard information?
3. How am I protected from those hazards?
4. What do I do in case of an emergency?

How often do I need TDG training?
The Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations state that a new certificate must be issued every 3 years (from the date of certification). There are exceptions to this rule: 1. If there are changes to the TDG regulations, 2. if the trainee's job description changes, 3. if the trainee changes employers; then they must retrain and a new certificate must be issued.

For more information on the TDG regulations, please visit the Transport Canada website.

How often do I need Confined Spaces Awareness training?
General training must be given before anyone works with a confined space. The training must be reviewed if there are any changes in the circumstances that may affect the safety of a worker or when provincial regulations require it. Ontario, for example, requires an annual review of a company's confined spaces training program.

Consult with your industry’s provincial safety association or Worker's Compensation Board for details on when re-certification is required.

YOW Canada recommends CSA training be conducted every 2 years to guarantee compliance with all the regulations.
