The Ontario Ministry of
Labour has announced that a compliance program that ran
between April 2004 and March 2008 has reduced the annual
workplace injuries rate by 20% over that period (that's
more than 50,000 incidents!). This is estimated to have
saved five billion dollars in direct and indirect costs
to employers as well as saved countless workers from
injuries and death.
Based
on these results, the ‘Safe at Work Ontario’ plan has
been adopted. It hopes to build on these results by
allowing
ministry inspectors to be flexible and strategic in
determining which businesses require their attention.
Based on injury rates, the employer’s compliance
history, and youth workers, among other factors,
Ministry inspectors can focus their efforts.
