Here is a good example of a part time worker who
required training:
“A high school student had a
part time job at a lumber mill on the clean up crew. He
worked once a week from Friday night through Saturday
morning cleaning up debris such as wood chips and
sawdust. While working, he opened a floor hatch, and
distracted, fell through the hatch to the basement floor
about four meters below. He suffered a broken leg and
other injuries. He was not wearing fall protection
which is mandatory if there is a risk of falling three
meters or more. The lumber mill was charged with two
safety violations and was convicted by the Alberta
Provincial Court on both violations.”

Many employers omit
Occupational Health and Safety training when they employ
part-time workers. These workers are subject to all the
same potential risks or dangers that full time employees
are; sometimes even more if they work the night shift
and are among few colleagues.
Please remember to train
your part-time staff as they require Occupational Health
and Safety training just as much as full-time
employees.
