Part Time Workers

Many employers hire part-time workers at their organizations. It is important to remember that, like full-time employees, they need training as well.

Here is a good example of a part time worker who required training:

“A high school student had a part time job at a lumber mill on the clean up crew. He worked once a week from Friday night through Saturday morning cleaning up debris such as wood chips and sawdust. While working, he opened a floor hatch, and distracted, fell through the hatch to the basement floor about four meters below. He suffered a broken leg and other injuries.  He was not wearing fall protection which is mandatory if there is a risk of falling three meters or more. The lumber mill was charged with two safety violations and was convicted by the Alberta Provincial Court on both violations.” 1

Many employers omit Occupational Health and Safety training when they employ part-time workers. These workers are subject to all the same potential risks or dangers that full time employees are; sometimes even more if they work the night shift and are among few colleagues.

Please remember to train your part-time staff as they require Occupational Health and Safety training just as much as full-time employees.
