The Ministry of Labour often does 'Safety Blitzes'.
In September, their focus will be on Workplace
Hazardous Materials (WHMIS).
An up-to-date WHMIS
program keeps employees current on the regulations
concerning hazardous materials in the workplace. The
system was designed to keep workers and employers
informed of the dangers and hazards associated with
the chemicals and substances that they may come into
contact with while on the job.
WHMIS training should
include general and site-specific training.
General training, such as YOW Canada's WHMIS
course, includes topics such as the regulations,
labels, material safety data sheets (MSDS),
controlled products, symbols, etc.
Site-specific is unique to your workplace and
focuses on the products that you work with or
may be exposed to. This includes where you keep the
personal protective equipment and MSDSs as well as
training for specific work and storage procedures.
Any workplace that
might have controlled products on site is required
to have a WHMIS training program in place.
Lack of compliance
can lead to costly fines, jail time, injuries and
even death.
