Christmas Eve Ends in Tragedy for 4 Workers

On December 24, 2009, 4 workers died after falling 13 storeys while making repairs to balconies of an apartment building.

4 of 5 workers working on the apartment building plummeted to their death. The
fifth man is in intensive care with two fractured legs and a broken spine.

Metron Construction Inc. has been handed eight orders which includes two
stop-work orders by the Ontario Ministry of Labour.

Joel Swartz, President of Metron, stated that in Metron's 23 years of business, they have never been charged with a violation to the Occupational Health and Safety Act. He also goes on to say that "If a field visit resulted in an order from
the Ministry of Labour, the issues were immediately rectified to the satisfaction
of the Ministry of Labour."

"Ontario Federation of Labour president Sid Ryan called on Ontario's attorney general to investigate whether criminal negligence was involved. He cited Bill C-45, known as the Westray Bill, that allows criminal charges to be laid if a company causes death or serious injury due to negligence."
