There
are big changes on the horizon for Canada’s TDG
Regulations.
In fact, Amendment 12 (formally Amendment Z) is
proposing 22 changes and is being recognized as one of
the most significant amendments to happen to TDG since
the 2001 Clear Language Amendments.
Presently, Transport Canada is waiting for the comment
period to be concluded and then Amendment 12 will be
law. The amendment will cover a number of critical
areas, such as:
• Updating references to international regulations, thus
improving efficiency of imports and exports;
• Clarifying some requirements, such as labeling of
Biological Substances in Category B;
• Incorporating several new safety marks from the
current UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous
Goods, such as the limited quantity mark and the new
Division 5.2, Organic Peroxide, symbol; and
• Overhauling Part 4, Dangerous Goods Safety Marks,
particularly with respect to placarding. It seems that
mixed loads that utilize “DANGER” placards will now
become much more complex.
Transport Canada has posted on their website the
Amendment 12, with a detailed look at each proposed
change. The guide not only spells out the changes, but
gives some insight to Transport Canada’s rationale
behind each one. You can view the proposed changes at
