Beware of High Pressure Sales Tactics Regarding
OH&S Notices and Training

The Ontario MOL received reports and complaints about aggressive, high-pressure sales tactics by private providers of workplace posters.  Have they visited your workplace?

The Ontario Ministry of Labour has received reports about companies who are using high-pressure sales tactics to sell occupational health and safety workplace posters, claiming they are "official" posters.

Interestingly enough, YOW Canada's office in Ottawa, Ontario was recently visited by one of these companies so we've experienced this first hand.  We won't name names, but beware if you receive an aggressive phone call or sales rep implying that they are from the ministry and trying to sell posters.  As the Ministry of Labour's news release states,

"These companies imply a connection with the ministry and are selling "official" posters that they claim will satisfy legislated posting requirements."

When they visited our office, they misrepresented themselves and came across as if they were from the ministry and were very aggressive about "enforcing the regulations" by selling their provincial OH&S posters.

The company that visited us used scare tactics to sell their posters. We feel it's more important to educate you on your legal requirements so you can make an educated and informed decision. Always request identification from individuals who enter your workplace. Legitimate Ministry of Labour or Worker's Compensation reps will have proper ID confirming their identity.

It's important to know that, in Ontario, there are certain things that must be posted in your workplace, such as the Employment Standards Act poster, the Occupational Health & Safety Act and your written OH&S Policy.

Depending on your workplace and what your employees do, various training may also required.  For example, if your employees work with or near controlled products, WHMIS training is required.  If they work with or near confined spaces, then adequate confined space training is required.  However, make sure you know what's required before making any decisions or buying posters and training.
