IMPORTANT UPDATE! Changes coming to Fall Protection Training
requirements in Ontario (April 1st, 2015)

There are major changes coming to the Ontario Fall Protection Regulations and training requirements (now known as 'Working at Heights Training').

As of April 1st, 2015, Ontario is adopting a new and more intensive training requirement which replaces the old standard. This Working at Heights training standard requires all 'new workers' who work in 'Construction Projects' to have a minimum 6.5 hours of training every 3 years.

The following are the minimum hours for training delivery:

  1. Working at Heights Basic Theory module - 3 hours; and
  2. Working at Heights Practical (hands-on) module - 3.5 hours.

Part A is allowed to be delivered 'online' while Part B is not. As such YOW Canada will no longer be delivering our current Fall Protection training as of April 1st, 2015 to Ontario workers who work on 'Construction Projects' (Training to all other Provinces other than Ontario and Newfoundland, will continue to be delivered).

There is however an important 'phase-in period' with these newly adopted 'Working at Heights' regulations. That is, that if you or your employees have previously had Fall Protection training with YOW Canada, those trainees are 'grandfathered-in' and therefore have a full 2 year grace period to comply with the new 'Working at Heights' standard. This applies to trainees who successfully completed YOW Canada's Fall Protection training before April 1st, 2015.

So, in a nutshell, any of your currently certified Fall Protection trainees will remain to be in compliance for 2 years after the April 1st, 2015 deadline. And if any of your current employees require Fall Protection training and have not yet been trained, they will also have this 2 year 'grace period' as long as they complete YOW Canada's 'Fall Protection Training Program' before the April 1st, 2015 deadline.

At your discretion, we urge you to ask any of your current employees who require Fall Protection training (who haven't already done so in the past) to complete the current YOW Canada's training program. This will give them the option of deferring their need to comply with the new 'full day' Working at Heights' training until April 1st, 2017.
