It's that time again! School is
over and students are looking for summer employment.
Over the next four months, the
Ontario government will focus on young and new workers in the
workplace. Companies need to evaluate their current safety
training and ask themselves: Does our workplace comply with
the Health and Safety guidelines?
Many young workers will be
working in industries where health and safety training is
required. "Inspectors
are focusing on workplaces where many young and new workers
are employed, including restaurants, landscaping sites,
arenas, mills, nursing homes, low-rise construction projects,
and farming operations."
"The safety blitz, now in its
fourth year, is targeting workplaces:
-with a high incidence of lost-time injuries among young and
new workers
-identified as high-priority
-known to have highly hazardous activities, processes or
equipment
-where complaints have been received and there is a poor
overall compliance history
-that have not been previously visited."

Workers need to remember that
they have 3 basic rights:
1. The right to know about hazardous materials and practices
2. The right to refuse work they believe is dangerous, and
3. The right to participate in decisions affecting their
health and safety.
