What is Health and Safety Awareness?
According to the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) there are three components to Health and Safety Awareness:

  1. An overview of the legislative rights, duties and responsibilities of safety in the workplace;
  2. An understanding of an internal responsibility system, functions and duties; and
  3. Basic understanding of hazard recognition, and controls.

Do I need a Health and Safety Awareness Course?
As of July 1, 2014 all workers and supervisors in Ontario require training in health and safety awareness.

General training (such as this course) will cover the legislation requirements.

Additionally all training should include some hands-on or “site-specific” training with the safety equipment to be used, location of information in the workplace and a review of the emergency procedures of the workplace.

Who is responsible for ensuring that my employees are adequately trained?
Regardless of the source of training or how it is provided to workers, the employer has the duty to ensure it is adequate to protect the health and safety of the workers.

It is up to the employer, in consultation with the Joint Health and Safety Committee or health and safety representative, if any, to determine the level and type of training provided.

How often do I need Health and Safety Awareness Training?
This is a one time course for workers and supervisors.

How can we comply with the training requirement?
Supervisors need a Health and Safety Awareness training that:

  1. Identifies the rights and responsibilities of supervisors and workers under the OHSA;
  2. Specifies roles of workplace parties, health and safety representatives, and joint health and safety committees;
  3. Explains the roles of the Ministry of Labour, Workplace Safety Insurance Board, and Health and Safety partners;
  4. Explains hazard recognition;
  5. Identifies the rights to be informed of hazards;
  6. Identifies the employer’s obligation to provide information to workers about controlled products;
  7. Identifies the steps in recognition, assessment, control and evaluation of hazards; and
  8. Explains where resources and assistance is available.

Who is responsible for Health and Safety Awareness?
The onus is on the employer to ensure that his or her staff is adequately trained. The responsibility to ensure workers are trained and the manner in which training is conducted rests with the employer. YOW Canada’s Online Health and Safety Awareness training is one method of training. Additional ‘hands-on’ training on the specific equipment and procedures to be used will be required.

How is compliance with the Regulations monitored?
Compliance activities are conducted by the Ministry of Labour.

Does YOW Canada’s Health and Safety Awareness course meet all Ontario’s training requirements?

What does the "YOW" in YOW Canada stand for?
YOW Canada’s offices are located in Ottawa, Ontario and Y-O-W are the international call letters for the Ottawa Airport. Plus, we think it’s a catchy name that’s easy to remember.

Can I take YOW's Health and Safety Awareness course and then train my own workers in Health and Safety Awareness?
YOW Canada’s Health and Safety Awareness course is not intended or designed for trainers and we do not recommend that it be used to train a trainer. In order to reap the full benefits of the course, we recommend that each trainee complete a Health and Safety Awareness course themselves. This also ensures that each employee receives a Health and Safety Awareness certificate of completion.
